Durham & The Triangle

The Triangle is a region within North Carolina anchored by the cities of Durham , Raleigh and Chapel Hill .  This urban area is home to over 1.5 million residents; the academic and research institutions of Duke University, North Carolina Central University, North Carolina State University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; and the Research Triangle Park (RTP), a 7,000-square-mile area dedicated solely to the advancement and development of research and technology.  Forbes, Money, and Fortune magazines have all recently ranked the Triangle as one of the best places in the United States to live or start a career.

 

Durham is often referred to as the “City of Medicine ” because of the outstanding hospitals and major national and multinational healthcare companies located here.  It is conveniently located near a number of major highways, rail services, and RDU International Airport .  Durham ’s prime location makes it easy to visit Raleigh and Chapel Hill, the beaches of the Outer Banks off the Atlantic coast, or the mountains of western North Carolina .

 

Durham alone has over 300 restaurants, and many of them have received national recognition.  Food & Wine, Gourmet, and Esquire magazines have all highlighted several restaurants and chefs in the Triangle area.  In addition to these acclaimed dining options, Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh and Franklin Street in Chapel Hill offer exciting nightlife options.

 

One of the favorite pastimes of Durham residents is attending sporting events to cheer on their favorite teams, whether it’s at the RBC Center to catch the 2006 Stanley Cup-winning Carolina Hurricanes or the Durham Bulls Athletic Park to watch Triple-A baseball.  The strong rivalries between the Triangle’s three ACC universities often lead to highly competitive and spirited games when the Duke Blue Devils, NC State Wolfpack or UNC Tar Heels are in action.

 

Durham and the surrounding areas in the Triangle offer a number of cultural, educational, historical, athletic, and natural amenities to both residents and visitors, and the area’s four distinct yet mild seasons make it possible to enjoy many of these activities year-round.  The Walnut Creek Amphitheatre plays host to major touring musical acts.  The North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh is arguably the premier public art collection between Washington , DC , and Atlanta , and has hosted major exhibitions featuring Rodin and Monet.  The American Dance Festival is a six-week summer festival of modern dance performances held in Durham .  There are numerous state parks sprinkled throughout the area which offer hundreds of trails whether your pleasure is running, hiking, or biking.
