Duke Ambulatory Care Services Fellowship

The Fellowship

The Duke Ambulatory Care Services Fellowship Program provides a comprehensive learning opportunity that will include operational exposure to important health care issues in the ambulatory environment, as well as practical administrative experience through hands on involvement in a variety of projects. The fellowship program is relatively flexible in allowing the development of individual interests. At the same time, the learning environment provides a directed framework that fosters insight into management dynamics of an academic medical center.
 
At this time as a new fellowship program, the Duke Ambulatory Care Services Fellowship will be offered every other year (2008, 2010, etc.).

Program Structure

The Duke Ambulatory Care Services Fellowship is divided into two components: the First Year and the Second Year.

First Year

During the first year, fellows spend their time rotating through the major ambulatory entities including: Duke Primary Care, Duke Health and Wellness, Duke Home Care and Hospice, Duke Hospital-Based Clinics, the Private Diagnostic Clinic, and Community Private Diagnostic Clinic. These divisions include support services, nursing services, human resources, financial management, information systems, primary care, managed care, and medical center administration. Fellows will also rotate through select corporate services such as Corporate Planning, Performance Services, and Corporate Finance.
 
The rotations are developed and monitored by senior managers and allow regular interaction at all levels of operations. Projects are assigned and monitored by the Fellowship Program Director as well as advisors of the fellow. Fellows will spend approximately half their time rotating and the other half working on projects. Along with the rotations throughout the year, fellows meet with the Fellowship Program Director, the Chief Operating Officer of Ambulatory Care Services, on a regular basis to ensure that the experiences accomplish the expectations and goals of the fellowship.

Second Year

During the second year, fellows focus on a particular area within Duke’s Ambulatory Care Services based upon personal interest and organizational need. Fellows may choose to attend additional departmental rotations as needed. The Fellowship Program Director continues to mentor the fellows throughout the second year of the fellowship.

Rotations

As mentioned, the first year of the fellowship consists of rotations throughout Duke’s Ambulatory Care Services. The length of each rotation ranges from one week to four weeks depending on the department. Rotations include the specific entities identified above and also, but not limited to:
 
  • Patient Safety and Accreditation
  • Performance Services
  • Finance
  • Strategic Planning/Business Development
  • Managed Care
  • Compliance
  • Risk Management
  • Patient Revenue Management Organization (PRMO)
  • Radiology
